Sketchbook Photos
I initially began this investigation into the impacts and effects of air pollution using a sketchbook to visually present my ideas. Here is a selection of some of the pages that I created before recording my information digitally. These pages range from media experiments, to artist research and primary source photographs. I began my sketchbook by first outlining what air pollution is and how it is a global issue, before researching artists and taking primary source photographs that ultimately led me to resolving my ideas. All of the information on these pages has also been uploaded to this website.

These six pages were all created to outline what exactly air pollution is and the effects it has both at a national and international scale. I used oil paints to create the girl on the right and she was made to emphasise the necessity for masks, due to how they can shield people from the negative effects of airborne pollutants. I also created the buildings below out of biro to show how this also affects urban areas. Finally, I highlighted key information that I collected from articles published by governments and agencies that have important information on air pollution.

This is the first artist that I researched and it was JMW Turner because of the effect he was able to create in his paintings. I believed that his artistic style was reminiscent of the effects air pollution has on environments. Therefore from researching him I was inspired to produce my own media experiments that led me into studying my next artist, John Virtue.

Above are watercolour experiments inspired by JMW Turner and based on primary source photographs that I had taken. This style of chiaroscuro is what led me into researching the monochromatic style of John Virtue. Whilst below, is a chalk and charcoal drawing that I made depicting an area of London, with the expressive style of John Virtue.

These pages were made to show my primary source photographs that I had taken of ink being dripped into water. I took these photographs after researching Supmanee Chaisansuk and becoming inspired by her fluid and colourful depiction of air pollution through ink.

To the left and below are paintings I made using both ink and paint, to visually depict the motion of air pollution. These were influenced by my primary source photographs of the ink and were limited to those colour palettes.

Above is a mixed media painting that I made inspired by my digital work that was influenced by Alex Williamson. It is a resolved idea that demonstrates how air pollution is capable of afflicting both people and places. I used biro pen to create the girl and the buildings, whilst I used ink and acrylic paint to create the bold background. These were the last pages I completed before recording my ideas entirely on a digital format
