The Necessity For Masks

After studying Alex Williamson and the techniques he uses to create his digital collages, I decided that it would be essential to take photos that can be used to demonstrate how air pollution physically impacts a person. The people in these photos are wearing masks to depict how people need to protect themselves from air pollution, due to detrimental impacts smoke and poisonous gases can have on a person's health. Carbon monoxide and nitrogen oxide are gases that are commonly emitted from the fumes of cars and other vehicles, the impact of this is that when it is inhaled, it can cause people to develop different forms of lung cancer. This is demonstrated in some of the photos, where the person has there hands around their neck to signify choking and act how they would if they were unable to breath. Moreover, the people in these photos represent that by wearing masks to defend themselves against the dangerous impacts of air pollution on their health. Furthermore, this idea of death being linked to air pollution is highlighted by the people wearing full black clothing, since that is commonly associated with funerals. Therefore to further emphasise the atmosphere of death and peril, the people are not only wearing masks but also full black clothing.

Using these primary source photos I will be able to depict graphically how air pollution physically impacts a person. I will cut out the people and use them as layers for my digital collages and as oppose to the standard brick backgrounds, I will be using segments from my ink photos to create the illusion that the person has been engulfed by air pollution. By also having these people wear masks it will emphasise the need for people to protect themselves and how they have been physically restricted, unless they want to be susceptible to the negative impacts of air pollution poses to their health.
