Resolved Ideas

Throughout this investigation into the impacts and effects of air pollution, i have had to develop ideas through experimentation, which has resulted in smaller projects taking place. These smaller projects include my digital work, collage creation and lino experiments. From each of these projects, i have created resolved ideas, which are final bodies of work than encapsulate what i was trying o achieve from experimenting with that medium or style. Therefore below are some of the resolved ideas that i created, with all of them helping formulate my overall final piece that answers the question posed at the beginning.

This is my resolved idea from my digital collage experiments. The digital collage on the left summarises my different creations, since it incorporates all of the aspects and ideas that i developed throughout the process. The collage includes primary source photos of buildings and people, as well as having my primary source photographs of ink as the background. This collage connotes how air pollution impacts both people and places, by being hazardous to peoples health and by staining the urban environment. I further developed this idea by creating a mixed media collage, that uses ink and biro to create that apocalyptic aesthetic. This collage was a large influence in creating my final piece, however this collage lacks the statistics and range of media that can be found in my final collage. Therefore this resolved idea served as a good basis from which my ideas developed.

The resolved idea to the left was formulated after i experimented with making a digital collage that exclusively focused on my photos taken in London. The purpose of this collage was to disorientate the viewer, representing how an area would appear after inhaling hazardous levels of air pollution. I used this collage as a reference for my physical collage. This physical collage was created to explore how different textures influence a painting. This was inspired by Alex Williamson and Ian Murphy.

This is another resolved idea that i created, with this one summarising my lino experiments. On the left, is a "decollages" that i made after studying Mimmo Rotella. However after studying how Alex Williamson uses data in his collages, i decided to do the same using a physical medium. I discovered that lino printing was the most effective way of doing this, therefore i produced a series of lino prints that state statistics on air pollution. This use of data to present the impacts of air pollution is a key aspect of my final piece, due to the striking severity of the information being presented.

Extra Individual Work

During this investigation, i produced several series of work that are connected through common ideas and processes. The selection of photos below however, are individual bodies of work that i produced at different moments of this investigation, with each of them achieving different goals, such as developing technical ability or being used as references for future work. The drawings of the buildings, the girl in the mask and the human anatomy, were all created out of biro pen and were made to explore how highlighting and shadows could be created. Both the girl in the mask and the two buildings drawings influenced my decision to use biro in one of my resolved ideas. I thought that the biro pen enabled the drawings to have a bleaker aesthetic which is more appropriate to the atmosphere that i was trying to create.

To the left is an oil painting that i made at the start of the investigation. I made it to show how people need to wear masks in order to protect themselves from the toxic air pollutants in the atmosphere. The paintings of the smoke being emitted from the chimneys, is a watercolour painting that i made to show the dynamic movement of smoke and the various colours present in it. Both of these paintings helped my painting ability and show the impacts of air pollution.
